Starfish train IT people in a highly copper-rich area of Zambia known as the Copperbelt, because there are many well-paid jobs at the mines for qualified IT professionals.
We have established links with Copperstone University College in Kitwe, headed by Dr Sitwala Mundia. Copperstone provides cost-effective yet high quality courses in IT, with students having to take and pass internationally recognised IMIS qualifications.
Starfish's first IT student is Carol, 23, who lives in Mufulira but boards at Copperstone. Carol has a five year old daughter called Karen who goes to school and is looked after by Granny while Carol completes her studies.
With Starfish funding, Carol has the chance to create a good standard of living for herself and her daughter, and indeed to look after Granny as she gets older.
